Comments : Greetings Vreeland Shipmates from the Greek Years

My wife, Cindy, and I had a great time at the reunion back in June. We were especially glad that Randy Hager and his wife, Lucille, were able to drive through Birmingham and pick us up. It was so nice to see Capt Snyder and so many shipmates.

During the trip Randy said he was having some fever on occasion and not long after we returned I got a call from Randy Hager saying he had been diagnosed with biliary tree cancer (this is a small tube between the bile duct, pancreas and the small intestine). Anyway, it is a very serious condition and Randy said they couldn’t operate.

I talked to Lucille on Saturday and she told me Randy was now under hospice care and may not last too many weeks.

Many of you may remember Randy, he reported aboard Vreeland in August 1972 and left for the Fleet Support Office in Athens after a couple years. He was a YN2 and he; we were in EX division together and did a lot of sight seeing with each other.

Some of you may want to send a note of support to Randy and Lucille Hager, their address is 3903 Harmony Street, Amarillo, TX 79109. Of course the Hager family would appreciate your prayers during this very trying time.

Comments : I was one of the CT's (Spooks) that sailed aboard the Vreeland on many occasions most memorable of which were Med ops. I was onboard probably somewhere around 6 times for a few weeks to a few months each time. For those who remember the spook van on the fantail, I was part of that. I still have fond memories of a cruise to the Greek Island of Volos (sp).
