Comments : EMCS(SW) Tom Coco, Vreeland 3M coordinator 85-87 passed away on 2/22/06 at his home in
Jacksonville.
Tommy had non-hodgkin lymphoma and knew his fate. His cremains are presently at Naval Station
Mayport awaiting burial at sea - at the same coordinates as I committed the ashes of his 12 year old
son from the fantail of Vreeland in 1988.
Tommy was a good sailor, a good chief, and a good friend to all who knew him.
In March of 1987 the USS Stark was hit by two Exocet air-to-surface missles, fired from an Iraqi
fighter. 37 sailors died in the attack. Tommy was transferred to Stark to replace the Chief
Electrician who was among the dead. Following a massive overhaul in Pascagoula the Stark was returned
to active service and Tommy transferred to the Fleet Reserve.
Rest in peace, my old friend...

Comments : I was on the Vreeland 82-84. I was on the vreeland when she got her "V".
I was there when we refueled from the barge while we were escorting the PLO.
I was onboard when the Hi-fer for there carrier helo went wrong.
Any one else remember being the bait when we crossed "The Line Of Death”. Remember the high speed
propellers reported by sonar?
Remember tracking a USSR contact for three day only to find out it was a training tape?
The fishing contest of the coast of Panama? Who caught the sea gull?
We went thru alot of guys in the fireroom. I made alot of cool friends Joe Carr you still out
there? How about David Hoey? Dillon, Brody, all the rest hope you all are doing well. I miss you guys.
We had alot of good times in port.
May the Bar Kansas in Palma never be the same.
Don
