Comments : First of all, let me thank you for putting together this
site, it's awesome!! I've often wondered the final fate of the "Mighty
Vern", and was relieved to hear that she wasn't sunk. I did see her in
Souda Bay last year, but didn't know it was her.
I did a lot of growing on the Vreeland. Both of my children were born
while I was stationed there. The lessons I learned from my shipmates
in "Gun Plot" have served me well through the years too. Although I'm
sure they probably won't believe it if they read this, but I do want to
thank Craig Wiley, Scott Reid, Paul Marchyok, Chuck Major, Tom Totten,
and Dave Kracht for helping me learn right from wrong.
Five years on a Frigate is an awful long time! Let's see, two weeks
after I reported aboard, we left for GTMO and REFTRA. Talk about jumping
in headfirst. I learned a lot about being a Sailor on that trip. The
1988 deployment was my first, and even though I spend almost half of it
"cranking", I had a really good time. Places like Ibiza, Spain;
Palermo, Sicily; Naples, Italy; Cartegena, Spain; Marseilles, France; Cannes,
France and Cagliari, Sardinia. I spent my 21st birthday in Palma,
Spain and had a great time, thanks to Tom Kindig. (I stopped in at the
Cowboy Bar in Calla Major last May, and the ballcap I gave them that night
is still hanging over the bar).

Notes of Interest : I commissioned the USS Cole in 1996, was selected
to FCC in 1998, and was both an instructor and course supervisor for the
AN/SPY-1B/D radar school from 1998-2001. I'm finishing a tour as the
Combat Systems Maintenance Manager on USS Ross DDG 71, and will be
retiring this summer after 20 years.
